Procedure Prep - Biopsies
How should I prepare for my procedure?
Follow the instructions given by your healthcare provider.
If your previous imaging was not done at one of our locations, you may be asked to contact your former provider and request that your film be sent to us for a comparison study.
How long will my procedure take?
Ultrasound biopsies typically take 45-60 minutes.
What happens during my procedure?
You will be positioned on a cushioned table and an ultrasound will be performed to confirm the location of the mass. Next, the area will be cleansed with an antiseptic solution and then numbed with local anesthetic. Using the ultrasound images, a small, thin needle will be inserted and samples of tissue will be removed.
What happens after my procedure?
The samples obtained from the biopsy will be applied to slides and sent to a laboratory for examination under a microscope. The findings will be sent to your healthcare provider.
Following the procedure, you may resume your normal diet, prescribed medications and activities. You may develop some bruising around the area that was biopsied.
