What is Neurointerventional Surgery?
Advanced Diagnostics and Treatment for Neurovascular Disorders
Neurointerventional Surgery (also called interventional neuroradiology or NIR), is practiced by subspecialty-trained neuroradiologists, specializing in minimally invasive techniques for the diagnosis and treatment of conditions of the brain, head and neck, spine, and spinal cord. It involves catheters and radiology to diagnose and treat neurological conditions and diseases. These types of procedures are called “minimally invasive,” because they generally need only a tiny incision instead of a larger incision necessary for open surgery.
Neurointerventional Surgeons
Neurointerventional surgery is practiced by subspecialty-trained neuroradiologists, leveraging expertise in both neurosurgery and radiology, as well as advanced training in image-guided, minimally invasive diagnostic and endovascular surgical techniques. They deliver accurate, targeted treatments to complex and sometimes life-threatening diseases and conditions
Collaborative Care
Doctors consult with neurointerventional surgeons for a wide variety of suspected and known diseases, disorders, and conditions. Your doctor may send you to a neurointerventional surgeon to have a diagnostic imaging test, such as an angiogram or CT scan. The neurointerventional surgeon will provide written test results and may consult with the referring doctor to make a diagnosis. Your doctor may also consult with a neurointerventional surgeon to determine the best treatment plan for you and to provide a minimally invasive treatment.
Neurointerventional Surgery Research
At Midwest Radiology, our physicians continually seek new ways to improve the diagnosis and treatment of neurovascular disorders. Our neurointerventional surgery experts are actively investigating acute stroke, advanced imaging techniques, and clinical outcomes.
Why Midwest Neuroinerventional?
For patients, the benefits of neurointerventional surgery include smaller incisions, less risk, faster recovery, and less pain than traditional surgery. Our team provides neurointerventional surgical care for many conditions that previously were untreatable or required more invasive, open surgical techniques.
- Accurate image interpretation and diagnosis
- Patient-centered imaging
- Endovascular techniques that lower the risk to patients, shorten hospital stays, and hasten patient recovery
- State-of-the-art angiogram suites with the ability to produce the highest quality images to evaluate and treat cerebrovascular disorders

Contact Us
Midwest Radiology is available to patients 24/7. Whether you are a new patient, former patient, or a new patient seeking a consultation or second opinion, we look forward to hearing from you. If you are a candidate for open surgery or have a complex disease, consider exploring your treatment options with an interventional radiologist. Interventional radiology can be an especially appropriate choice for patients who are in weak health or have previously undergone numerous prior surgeries.
