Lung Screening
Attention smokers. This pain-free Low-Dose CT scan of the chest takes less than 10 seconds. Using a sophisticated low radiation multi-detector CT scanner, the procedure can detect lung abnormalities not visible on a standard chest x-ray that might indicate early-stage lung cancer. Special protocols are used in the screening process. And early lung cancer detection can improve treatment outcomes.
Why Should I Have The Screening?
Chest CT is especially effective for diagnosing lung cancer at its earliest, most curable stage. An x-ray of the chest can be taken to look for early lung cancer, but recent medical studies have shown that low-dose CT scans provide better results. CT scans are able to detect very small nodules in the lung that would not otherwise be visible on a plain chest x-ray. Many nodules will be non-cancerous and require no treatment. Some nodules may require further testing.
- About two out of three people diagnosed with lung cancer are 65 or older.
- Fewer than 2% of all cases are found in people younger than 45.

Who Should Have a Lung Screening?
The U.S. Preventative Services Task Force recommends a Low Dose CT Lung Cancer Screening annually, intended for individuals who meet the following criteria:
- Men and women who are between the ages of 50 to 80
- Current or former smokers (quit within last 15 years)
- 20 pack year history (Packs Per Day X Years Smoked = Pack Years)
Risk Factors for Lung Cancer Include
- Smoking tobacco
- Significant exposure to second-hand smoke
- Significant exposure to asbestos or radon
